ACCESS PATHWAYS
In Australia, medicinal cannabis is regulated under the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) framework. Access to these products requires assessment and authorisation by a qualified medical practitioner. Doctors are not permitted to advertise that they prescribe specific medications, in accordance with TGA legislation and the professional standards of the Medical Board of Australia and AHPRA.
Medicinal cannabis can generally be accessed through:
- Schedule 4 prescriptions issued by an authorised medical practitioner.
- The Special Access Scheme (SAS), which allows practitioners to apply for access on a case-by-case basis.
The details of authorised prescribers are not publicly available due to privacy and regulatory requirements. Clinics that facilitate access operate independently and may have differing consultation processes, fees, and assessment procedures.

CBD Australia have provided a tool for users of our website to conduct an informational self-assessment. This self-assessment is designed to provide general guidance about whether an individual may meet preliminary criteria for further evaluation by a registered medical practitioner. Completing this tool does not replace a medical consultation, and it does not guarantee eligibility for medicinal cannabis.
